Mayweather vs. Ortiz: A review of the upcoming fight

By Dan Henderson: September 17th should bring a good fight between WBC welterweight champion Vicious Victor Ortiz and Floyd Money Mayweather Jr. Victor Ortiz has turned his career around after his fight against Andre Berto in what was an epic encounter where he showed heart and courage to climb up of the canvas and win a unanimous decision.

Everyone questioned Ortiz’s heart in the fight with the hard hitting Marcos Maidana where he seemed to give up. After the fight Ortiz was heavily criticized but I feel it was unfair as you can’t judge him because he was getting a savage beating and a lot of people would not have been able to take that punishment that night maybe I’m wrong.
Floyd Mayweather is being considered a heavy favourite for the fight for the obvious reason of him being in many peoples eyes the P4P king and he has come into the fight with his usual confidence and flamboyancy. Mayweather has trashed talked Ortiz in the run up to the fight picking up on the point of the Maidana fight.

Which is pretty normal as Floyd does that with everyone he fights he is good at getting into your head. I have always admired Floyd’s skills as a fighter the way he defends himself with the shoulder roll technique and the the counter punching abilities but at the same time I admire Victor’s hunger and determination to beat Mayweather which makes for an interesting fight.

I do believe Mayweather will win on September 17th I feel this has come to early for Victor but if Victor Ortiz was to perform well and still lose then I don’t think it would matter to much Ortiz is only 24 years old and could still go on to great things and would still command the respect of the boxing public. Now If Victor was to beat Mayweather where would that leave a potential fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacman Pacquiao?

Victor Ortiz Has Floyd Mayweather Jr. in His Sights

In boxing, it’s easy to prove you’re the best… all you have do is win. For WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz, winning has come with hard work and knowing what losing really feels like.

Born in Liberal and raised in Garden City, Kansas, it hasn’t always been pay-per-view boxing match-ups and big pay days for Ortiz. By the time he was 10 years old, he and his siblings were abandoned by his parents and left to be raised in the Kansas foster care system.
“I grew up with a Caucasian family and before that I was running around like a stray dog,” said Ortiz, a Mexican-American. “I’ve been through a lot, you know. And I always say… what can this person give me that I haven’t gone through or I haven’t already received?”

At some point during his amateur career, Ortiz dealt drugs to make money. He would later quit after he saw his picture on the cover of a local paper when he won a Golden Gloves championship, and he realized that he could be something better.

“I’ve been through it all. I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen the highs; I’ve seen the lows,” said Ortiz.

His fight to survive and his drive to win has carried over to a career in boxing. Ortiz, now 24, is a world champion whose prominence rises with each victor.

For his next fight he’ll try to defeat someone who has never lost and someone who is considered one of the top two pound-for-pound fighters in the world: Floyd “Money” Mayweather Jr.

“I’m not taking this fight because of the pay and this and that," said Ortiz. “I just want Floyd, you know. He’s one of the best of all time.”

Floyd will face a challenger for the first time in 16 months after a lengthy lay-off that included some legal troubles. But don’t think Ortiz is underestimating his opponent.

“You can’t underestimate anyone, man. He’s a great fighter. So it’d be ignorant on my behalf to think of him as some kind of, like, walking stepping stone,” said Ortiz.

While the days of living like a “stray dog” are long gone and life of a well-paid fighter is his new life, Ortiz doesn’t forget what made him who he is today.

“I’ve been to the bottom. I’ve tasted the dirt. I’ve been that piece of gum on the bottom of people’s shoe,” said Ortiz. “So at the end of it I was like, What are you going to give me that I haven’t already been through?'”

In boxing today, two names have become the focal point of the sport, Floyd and Manny Pacquiao (who most consider the best in the sport). With this fight, Ortiz has an opportunity to become a household name and the best in his profession.

“I always wanted to go down in history as one of the all-time greats. I’m knocking at the door, you know. And I’m definitely going to stay here as champion,” said Ortiz. “I want that history that they have. I want that pie. You know what I mean? ... I’m not just trying a little bite here. [No]. I’m going to swallow it all.”

September 17th in Las Vegas, NV he’ll have his chance to cement his legacy.

Floyd Mayweather Jr vs. Floyd Mayweather Sr: Highlight of 24/7 Mayweather - Ortiz

Pre-fight weigh-in results

Exactly one month to go before the much awaited Mayweather vs Ortiz fight, Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz tipped on the scales to measure their current weights. This is a 30-day mandatory weigh-in to ensure that the expected weight loss of the fighters will be safe & healthy.

The upcoming fight, dubbed as Star Power: Floyd Mayweather vs Victor Ortiz, is set happen on September 17, 2011. It will be a split-site event because the Alvarez vs Gomez, one of the major undercards of this fight, will be settled inside the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Victor Ortiz weighed in at 157.4 pounds while Floyd Mayweather Jr comfortably weighed in at 149 pounds. The upcoming Mayweather vs Ortiz fight will be for the WBC Welterweight Title which has a weight limit of 147 lbs. Floyd is only 2 pounds higher than the maximum limit. This will be an advantage for him because he will no longer add extra efforts to shed a lot of weight. The fight will happen inside the luxurious MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas.

The WBC mandated weight for the 30-day pre-fight weigh in is 162-lbs for the Welterweight Division. This allows the sanctioning body to monitor the weight of the boxers to avoid any issues concerning the weight loss of both boxers later on.

Morales vs Matthyse will be on the undercard and the will fight for the WBC Light Welterweight Title. Morales weighed in at 153 lbs whereas Matthysse, who fought versus Devon Alexander fewer than two months ago, seems to be in great shape at 147.5 lbs.

Saul Alvarez came in at 165.5 pounds while Alfonso Gomez weighed in at 161 pounds. Alvarez will defend his WBC junior middleweight belt against Gomez.

Fight will be comparable to Floyd-Hatton

Many boxing experts predicted that the forthcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather and Victor Ortiz will end via a late round stoppage or a unanimous decision; most of them are in favor of the undefeated Floyd Jr to win. Mayweather, who was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, now lives and trains in Las Vegas, where the fight dubbed as Star Power: Mayweather vs Ortiz will happen on September 17, 2011.

Based on the predictions, this mega-event, which is expected to garner over a million pay-per-view buys, will be comparable to Floyd Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton.

The Mayweather versus Hatton fight which happened on December 8, 2007 was one of the most entertaining fights in recent years.

Floyd and Ricky were both undefeated when they fought each other. In the first few rounds of their fight, Ricky was winning most of the rounds. In the middle rounds, Floyd started to unleash his barrage of punches after he discovered the fighting style of Hatton. In the 10th round, Mayweather hit Ricky with a solid hook to the chin - and it was an understatement - which made the whole world realize that Mayweather is not only an entertaining boxer who talks trash outside the ring but a warrior who knows how to adjust to his opponent's style.

In the upcoming fight, Ortiz will come out strong as expected. He is younger and naturally bigger than Floyd so he will use these advantages in the first few rounds of the Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. Just like what Hatton did to Floyd when they fight, Ortiz will try everything to knock Floyd out in the first to middle rounds. In the late rounds, Floyd will be "Floyd" because he will start throwing his precise punches and defending himself with his shoulder roll defense.

Ortiz has higher KO percentage than Mayweather

"Vicious" Victor Ortiz, who used to be 'nobody' in the boxing world, has suddenly become boxing's newest star because of hyping the upcoming Mayweather vs Ortiz fight. Ortiz won against the undefeated Andre Berto in April and acquired the WBC Welterweight Belt.

Ortiz [won 29 (KO 22) + lost 2 (KO 1) + drawn 2 = 33] has a higher KO percentage compared to Floyd "Pretty Boy" Mayweather Jr [won 41 (KO 25) + lost 0 (KO 0) + drawn 0 = 41]. At 66.67 %, he is much better than Floyd's 60.98 knockout percentage. Victor is one of the most entertaining boxers today. He showed the world, in his recent fights, that he is one of the best in the 147-lb division.

Victor Ortiz is going to defend his WBC Welterweight Belt against Mayweather well-over a month from now. He is bigger and younger than Floyd but his skills will be tested against the undefeated tactician.

Floyd is known as one of the most versatile boxers in the history of the sport. Even with his boring style of boxing, he is still one of the best out there. Based on the Mayweather vs Ortiz tale of the tape, there are no significant advantages over the other boxer which makes this fight very amusing.

Ortiz wants to fight power with power and speed with speed. He is not afraid to exchange barrage of punches with his opponent as long as he lands a solid punch. He has the higher knockout percentage compared to Floyd, but the question is, will he be able to hit him with good and effective punches?
